6 TIPS (Updated) FOR ELIMINATING CHALLENGE W/HOOTSUITE BULK SCHEDULER

Have you been feeling like this tryin tryin tryin FOREVER to get the Hootsuite Bulk Scheduler to actually SAVE you time and work properly with Excel formatting?

After HOURS of fiddling around to get the Bulk Scheduler to work “easy” as they promised

I finally accidently found the solution.

Couldn’t figure it out because it wasn’t “logical”!  Still isn’t but it works like a charm every time.

Once I figured this out the

Bulk Scheduler works easy peasy!

Hope you find this helpful!!!

Note: (added 12/14- if you get error msgs when you upload your excel to the scheduler and then you fix them and reload…go to your Twitter, Facebook and Linked In and what ever others you are going to be hooting to and double check that the posts are not double or tripled entered.  It says the posts won’t be posted “until errors are fixed” BUT they DO get posted somehow.  I know its happened to me several times.)

Here’s the steps:

  1. Down load the sample .csv file from HootSuite Bulk Scheduler
  2. Create  your bulk message list based on their template
  3. Before you save your list- Put cursor on the “A” column to highlight your “A” column (which should be the column the date and time are in)
  4. Right click – choose “Format Cells”
  5. Choose “Custom”
  6. Scroll down through choices until you get to the one that looks like this:  m/d/yyyy  h:mm  Choose this one.

It appears in the box at the top of the choices under the word “Type” So the box will now look like this:

Type:

m/d/yyyyy  h:mm

Change it to d/m/yyyy h:mm

Add andbefore the /

Add ambefore the  /

Add an “hbefore the:

Should now look like this: dd/mm/yyyyy hh:mm

ClickOK

(Bear in mind the “” quote marks and the italic are not part of the actual “fix”  I am just using them here for emphasis)

Next rename and date the page tab at the bottom of  your excel sheet: (right click-choose “RENAME”… example:  12-12 Cyber Hoot Twitter

If you are going to send the same messages to Twitter, Linked In and Facebook then you could probably just use the date.  I have chosen to send out to Twitter every hour but only every other hour for Face Book and I make my Linked IN messages more business oriented and only send between 8 and 5 so I have 3 xcel files I use. Each day then, I change my date and messages.

Next Click on the “SAVE AS” (I always use this one so as not to erronously delete a previous file) from your Drop Down on the top of your page if you are a Windows user.

Hopefully you know how to do this already.

UPLOADING INTO HOOTSUITE

(Wake UP Owly)

  1. Now open your HOOTSUITE Bulk Scheduler Option
  2. You will see the choice to “Browse” to “Select File” – do that.
  3. Right next to that choice There is a drop-down menu that you can choose from so you can upload your excel file to Twitter, Linked In, Facebook or whatever social networks you have added to Hootsuite.  Choose one.
  4. Click “Submit” and you should be good to go.

HERE’S THE KICKER

EVERY time you make a date change, update or correction you have to go thru the above steps BEFORE you resave the file.

Otherwise you will get error messages when you click “SUBMIT” in Hootsuite’s Bulk Schedule box.

If you get an error msg,  then just go thru the steps for formating column “A” listed above and you should be ok.

Hi Linda, thanks for the breakdown of this. I use hootsuite and have not looked into the automation yet. Your article inspires me to give it a whirl! Thanks a lot. Donovan
